Augmented Reality

“We don’t necessarily have to think of immersion into the virtual and augmentation of the physical as the opposites... it all depends on how we understand the idea of addition: we may add additional information to our experience – or we may add an altogether different experience.”

Light+Dark

In collaboration with Ed Colmar & Tracy Cornish
2010

Light + Dark is a multi-user persistent online locative Augmented Reality game currently being developed for the android platform. It is an interactive experience which asks users to traverse a multi-dimensional world that integrates the physical environment.

New planes of existence become apparent as players explore terrain, craft objects and interact with real and virtual characters. These planes share both light and dark elements, objects, spaces, characters and players. Resources and actions in the physical environment have intrinsic value in the virtual game play which contribute to their tendency towards lightness or darkness. Objects are composed of genetic codes formed by character strings which can be split and recombined from their base letters which can be found in naturally occurring elements.

Group collaboration is encouraged for certain high-level tasks where users would need to work collectively (and physically co-located) to achieve their goal. Players engage with the physical/virtual planes via both traditional top-down topographical layered maps as well as by using a live augmented camera perspective.
